woodcut, linocut...In this technique the ink goes on the original surface of the matrix. Woodcut is the oldest printmaking technique. The matrix is a block of wood. Traditional text printing is also a relief technique.

etching, acquatint, drypoint...In this technique the ink goes beneath the original surface of the matrix. In etching the matrix is copper, zinc or steel plate which is covered with a waxy ground which is resistant to acid. The tool is a pointed etching needle that made thiny lines. The plate is dipped in acid. The acid "bites" into the metal, where it is exposed - the lines of our drawings.
